The Effects of Peat Swamp Forest Patches and Riparian Areas within Large Scale Oil Palm Plantations on Bird Species Richness

چکیده

It is well established that oil palm one of the most efficient and productive crops. However, agriculture also threats to tropical biodiversity. This study aims investigate how set-aside areas in an plantation affect bird The research area includes two set-asides areas: peat swamp forest riparian reserves sites adjacent reserved sites. A total 3,074 birds comprising 100 species from 34 families were observed landscape on peatland located northern part Borneo, Sarawak, Malaysia. Results showed efforts by large scale dominated landscapes supported distinct richness. High percentage canopies shrub covers had a positive effect richness at between forest. Herbaceous cover with height less than 1 m influenced abundance closed plantations are essential supporting bird’s refuges should be management improve biodiversity conservation. Thus, provided enough risks habitat successfully managed, can play important role

Logged peat swamp forest supports greater macrofungal biodiversity than large‐scale oil palm plantations and smallholdings

Intensive land expansion of commercial oil palm agricultural lands results in reducing the size of peat swamp forests, particularly in Southeast Asia. The effect of this land conversion on macrofungal biodiversity is, however, understudied. We quantified macrofungal biodiversity by identifying mushroom sporocarps throughout four different habitats; logged peat swamp forest, large-scale oil palm...

Leaf size indices and structure of the peat swamp forest

Leaf size indices of the tree species in the peatland of Agusan del Sur in Mindanao in Philippines was examined to deduce the variation of forest structure and observed forest zonation.  Using raunkiaer and webb’s leaf size classification, the leaf morphometrics of seven tree species consistently found on the established sampling plots were determined.  The species includes Ternstroemia phi...

Riparian reserves within oil palm plantations conserve logged forest leaf litter ant communities and maintain associated scavenging rates

The expansion of oil palm plantations at the expense of tropical forests is causing declines in many species and altering ecosystem functions. Maintaining forest-dependent species and processes in these landscapes may therefore limit the negative impacts of this economically important industry. Protecting riparian vegetation may be one such opportunity; forest buffer strips are commonly protect...

Mitigating the impact of oil-palm monoculture on freshwater fishes in Southeast Asia.

Anthropogenic land-cover change is driving biodiversity loss worldwide. At the epicenter of this crisis lies Southeast Asia, where biodiversity-rich forests are being converted to oil-palm monocultures. As demand for palm oil increases, there is an urgent need to find strategies that maintain biodiversity in plantations. Previous studies found that retaining forest patches within plantations be...

Designing oil palm landscapes to retain biodiversity using insights from a key ecological indicator group

Oil palm expansion threatens biodiverse ecosystems across the tropics. However, palm oil is a widely used and profitable crop, so identifying strategies that mitigate the impact of oil palm expansion on biodiversity is important. Riparian reserves (strips of forest along rivers) are protected in many countries for hydrological reasons and also support species that would not otherwise persist in...
